Donations
The life of the Brotherhood of the Theotokos, ‘the Sign’ is funded exclusively through the secular work of the monks and the generosity of benefactors. We receive no financial support from the Archdiocese, the State of Bavaria, or the German Federal Government (i.e. we receive no income derived from Church Tax). The monks are grateful to receive donations in support of their ministry and especially towards the projected cost of a permanent monastic residence. If you’re able to support the Brotherhood, please consider making a regular or one-off donation via the form on this page. You can also make a donation directly to our bank account.

Currently, the monastic brotherhood operates out of a rented apartment in the old city of Regensburg. Although the apartment offers adequate accommodation for the monks, the monastic chapel and refectory are squeezed into one room and there is no room for overnight guests and no outdoor space. Furthermore, visitor access for services must be pre-arranged, the apartment overlooks a noisy street, and the monks must maintain full-time secular jobs in order just to pay the rent. The monks are therefore working towards changing their living situation. The priorities for their new home include:
• adequate liturgical space and the potential to construct a chapel/church,
• room to accommodate guests/inquirers and/or potential to construct additional lodgings,
• outdoor space for contemplation and food production (vegetables, chickens, bees, etc.),
• privacy/isolation to support spiritual solitude and to leave neighbours undisturbed,
• commutable distance from Regensburg in order to minister to the parish community and maintain current secular work as needed.
Efforts to acquire a monastic home through local ecclesiastical and private property owners have unfortunately yielded nothing. Therefore, the monks have resolved to move forward independently. However, while the area around Regensburg is exceptionally beautiful and suitable for monastic life, it is also expensive. In addition to financing the purchase and renovation of a suitable property, the monks will also need to cover legal and moving costs and acquire a car.
The financial needs of the monastic brotherhood can therefore be broken down as follows:
• property: approx. €400,000 (approx. €60,000 already pledged)
-full financing via a combination of donations and deposit+mortgage/private loan
-offers of full/partial interest-free loans are particularly welcome
• renovations: approx. €100,000
-all affordable property that we have seen will require renovation to be habitable
-pledges of cash, materials/labour, and loans are welcome
• legal/moving costs: approx. €50,000 (offers of pro bono legal assistance are welcome)
• car (cash donations/vehicle offers are welcome).
The more of the property purchase that can be financed outright or by interest-free loan, the less dependent the monks will be on secular work and the more they will be able to concentrate on their monastic activities, including traditional crafts and outreach.
